Toyota Previas in the United States come with a vehicle-theft-deterrent system. The system is engaged when the ignition key is turned to the locked position and all of the doors and the hood are locked. The system sounds an alarm and flashes the exterior lights if the doors or hood are forcibly opened or if the battery is disconnected and reconnected while the doors are locked. The theft-deterrent system also cuts the starter circuit, preventing the car from being started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Master key or subkey
  1. Step 1

Insert the master key or the subkey into the ignition switch. Turn the key clockwise to the "ON" position. Press the driver’s-side power-window switch down until the window is completely open. Press the passenger’s-side power-window switch down until that window is completely open as well.

  2. Step 2

Turn the key counterclockwise to the "LOCK" position. Remove the key from the ignition switch and secure it somewhere on your person. Instruct all passengers to exit the vehicle. Exit the vehicle. Close and lock all doors with the key. Make sure the hood is closed.

  3. Step 3

Wait for at least 30 seconds while the system sets itself. Observe the system-indicator light located in the center of the dash; it will flash when all the doors and the hood are closed and locked, to make sure the system is set.

  4. Step 4

Reach through an open window and manually unlock the door from the inside. If the theft-deterrent system is functioning properly, the alarm should sound.

  5. Step 5

Insert the key into the keyhole of either the driver’s-side door or the front passenger’s-side door. Turn the key counter clockwise to unlock the door and cancel the system.

Tips & Warnings
  • The system indicator light will come on when the system is ready to be set. The doors may be opened without a key.
  • The system indicator light will flash when the system is set. Only unlock the doors with the key.
  • The system indicator light will be off when the system is inactive. The doors and hood may be opened without the use of a key.
  • If the theft-deterrent system is not functioning properly, it should be checked by your Toyota dealer.
  • These instructions are specific to the 1991 model. Other years may have slight different instructions.
