How to Hook a Router to a DSL Modem
Hooking up a router to a DSL modem can be a lengthy, frustrating process. It is important to have all instruction booklets and installation CD-ROMs for both the router and DSL modem handy before you begin this process. These steps are intended to provide a basic understanding of setup procedures, but do not replace the steps outlined by your router manufacturer.

Make sure that your Internet connection is working properly by connecting to the Internet with a computer hooked up directly to the modem.

Read and follow any instructions provided with your router.

Run the installation CD-ROM if one was provided with your router.

Attach the power cord to your router, then plug it into a wall outlet or power strip. If you plug it into a power strip, make sure the strip is on.

Connect a CAT5/Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your modem, then plug the other end into the Internet port on your router. The port on your router will be the single, stand alone port that is not numbered. It should be labeled Ethernet or Internet. If you tested you Internet connect as recommended, then this cable will be the one you plugged into your computer.

Insert one end of a CAT5/Ethernet cable into the first port of your router. It should be labeled with a "1." Then plug the other end into your computer.

Check that the lights on your modem are all lit and the lights on the router for port 1 and Internet are lit up. Test your Internet connection.

If your router is wireless, there are further steps that need to be taken. Consult your product instruction booklet.
Hooking up the router out of order may result in no Internet connectivity.
