An Oriental rug can add exquisite beauty to any room. Its intricate designs and complementary colors can help tie together a space that lacks interest. Stains on your rug can be quite bothersome, however. Fortunately, the cleaning process is quite simple.

From Quick Guide: Carpet Stain Removal Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vacuum
  • Bucket
  • Soft scrub brush
  • Mild dish soap
  • Paper towels
  1. Step 1

Vacuum the Oriental rug before cleaning the stain. The vacuuming will take care of any loose dirt or debris contributing to the stain.

  2. Step 2

Fill a bucket with water and a squirt of dish washing soap. Use mild rather than strong soap on Oriental rugs, which are somewhat delicate.

  3. Step 3

Remove the stain on the Oriental rug by scrubbing lightly with the sudsy water in the bucket and a soft scrub brush. Dip the scrub brush into the bucket, gather some suds and apply them to the stain.

  4. Step 4

Dry the Oriental rug by blotting up the remaining soap and water with paper towels. Continue the blotting process until you have removed as much moisture as possible. Allow the remainder to air dry.

  5. Step 5

Wrap up the cleaning process with another light vacuuming after the Oriental rug has dried completely. The vacuuming will help to remove any remaining soap that has been left in the carpet's pile due to the scrubbing. Repeat the process if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test the carpet for color fastness before proceeding with a full scrubbing. If the colors of the carpet begin to run upon getting wet, discontinue the process and seek assistance from a professional.
  • Blotting up spills immediately before they can become stains can be your best defense for keeping your Oriental rug in pristine condition.
  • Although this cleaning process can be very effective in removing stains on Oriental rugs, repeatedly wetting your rug is never a good idea. If the rug continuously needs cleaning, you may need to move it to a new location. Too much water can eventually lead to dry rot, so cleaning should be minimal.
