The Savu python is a snake that you are not likely to come by to often unless you are on the island of Sawu, or if you see one in a private collection. This python is found exclusively on Sawu, and was only recently discovered back in 1993. With serious restrictions placed on the Savu python, it is now illegal to export this fabulous reptile, so viewing this species is becoming a rare treat. If the opportunity arises, know how to identify the Savu python.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Realize that though it is a python, it is actually quite small by python standards. The Savu python grows to about four or five feet in length. This is much smaller than the average pythons of the world.

  2. Step 2

Notice the coloration of the Savu python, which can be anywhere from flat black to brown. Brown species generally will have black specks throughout the length of the body. Some specimens will have almost a light pinkish tint to them and this gives the Savu python a bit of a glowing appearance.

  3. Step 3

See the incredible coloration differences in Savu python babies. The smaller, younger Savu pythons will be an orange color and are very striking to look at. As they age, they take on the coloration of the parents and darken.

  4. Step 4

Watch the older Savu pythons develop white eyes as they age. The older a Savu python gets, the whiter their eyes begin to get. This strange effect makes the Savu python stand out from any other snake on the planet. This gives the snake a very eerie appearance.

  5. Step 5

Know that the Savu python likes to burrow to stay out of sight. Most any Savu will likely try to find a place to hide if it is approached, so getting a good view of one of these unique, rare snakes is difficult at best.

  6. Step 6

Know the range of the Savu python. The Savu is found only on the island of Sawu. This snake is sometimes called a "Sawu python" as well due to the island from which it originates. This island has now banned exporting this species due to the destruction of its numbers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Savu pythons are quite snappy, so be sure to keep your distance.
  • Never attempt to remove a Savu from the wild as they are protected.
