How to Successfully Complete the NaNoWriMo Challenge

For most people, November is just another month. That's not the case for several writers. November is known as National Novel Writing Month for all potential and current writers. The goal is to write 50,000 words. Whether writing is your hobby or your profession, November is the ideal time to complete a novel. It's not about quality; it's about quantity. Having a plot in mind isn't necessary. You'll find that writing can be easy if you don't over think it.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your account. Go to the National Novel Writing Month Website and sign up. It can be completed in a manner of minutes.

    • 2

Fill out your profile and biography. Make your account all about you. Add a picture to your profile to make it fun and interesting.

    • 3

Check out the forums and other available pages for the participants before November. You can be an active member of the Website. It can make the experience more fun and exciting if you interact with the other members. Also, you can add some of the other members to your friend list.

    • 4

Find other people to write with. Tell any writers you know about this challenge. Doing the challenge by yourself is perfectly fine, but doing it with other people can make it seem like a group event. You can provide each other with moral support.

    • 5

Start writing on November 1. Many people like to begin writing at midnight. It's an interesting way to go about it, and you can even have a party with the other people involved with this writing challenge.

    • 6

Set a word count goal for each day. You should write as much as you can each day, but many people like to have a word count to reach. It can make it seem like a more manageable goal.

    • 7

Write during your spare time. Perhaps you have extra time at the end of your lunch break. Jump on your computer and write as much as you can. Five or ten minutes of writing here and there can really add up.

    • 8

Save the rewrites for December. Don't go back. The point of the challenge is to reach the goal. Sometimes not thinking about your writing can get you further than planning it out. Let the words flow. Don't edit or delete some things. You have time to go back and edit your work later on.

    • 9

Update your word count on the website each day. You can see your progression throughout the month.

    • 10

After you've reached the 50,000 word goal, upload it to the Website. You will have to wait until that feature is ready on the Website. Once this is confirmed, you have completed the National Novel Writing Month challenge.

    • 11

Print out your certificate or copy the code onto your Website. Everyone will know that you have completed the challenge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write everything in one document. If you split it up into chapters or sections, it can be difficult to keep an accurate word count.

  • Don't get discouraged! You may go through a few days where you don't want to write. That's fine! All you have to do is catch up later.
