How to Add Text to a Login Screen on Mac OS X

Adding text to the login screen is a helpful and handy customization for your Mac. You can add reminders, security alerts or even your name and phone number to help recover your Mac if it is ever stolen. Follow these steps if you want a personalized look.

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac OS X
  1. Step 1

    In an open Finder window, navigate to: "Library/Preferences and find the file: com.apple.loginwindow.plist"

  2. Step 2

    Double-click on the file "com.apple .loginwindow.plist" to open the file in TextEdit or any other plain text editing application.

  3. Step 3

    In the open "com.apple.loginwindow.plist" file, you will notice a number of tags or coded preferences. Just below the first tag, insert the following text: <key>LoginwindowText</key> <string>Sample Text</string>

  4. Step 4

    Replace the "Sample Text" example shown in the last window with the text you want to use as your login text. Save the file and quit TextEdit. The next time you restart or login your Mac, you will see your new login text.
