How to Apply for Dance Scholarships

Dancing is your life, and now you want to further your skills to make it your true profession. Luckily, many colleges and universities enable you to intensify your study of dance as an art form through highly competitive, quality programs. The only possible road block is money. Thankfully, dance scholarships abound in many of the most highly-regarded college dance programs.

Instructions

    • 1

Research colleges and universities that offer dance programs. Your high school guidance counselor can help you pinpoint a college based on your preferences for dance program type, college size and geographic location. You can also search for programs online using the link provided in the Resources section below.

    • 2

Do a dance audition. Contact the college and ask about what will be expected of you during a typical dance audition for its dance department. Ask if you will perform in a group or solo, as well as the types of dances you must perform. Knowing this information will help you determine how intensely you must prepare, as well as what items, such as types of dance shoes, you must bring to the audition.

    • 3

Prepare a routine for your dance audition. While it depends solely on the program and the preferences of the college dance department, some colleges may want you to perform solo or prepare more than one routine to assess your grasp of multiple dance styles.

    • 4

Brush up on multiple dance styles if you're currently concentrating on just one. Many college dance programs expect dancers to have working knowledge of the basic dance styles: modern, tap, jazz and ballet. While mastery of each dance form is usually not expected, evaluators will be judging your ability to work with other dancers, your overall skill and technique and your attitude.

    • 5

Prepare a bag of essential dance supplies, such as proper dance shoes and extra tights and leotards to bring to the audition. You can never be too prepared to look and perform your best for the dance faculty.

    • 6

Eat properly, rest and relax before your audition day. A well-rested, focused dancer with an enthusiastic attitude is the dancer with the best shot at the scholarship.

Tips & Warnings

  • Publications such as "Dance Magazine" offer college search tools and tips especially for dancers looking to forward their education in dance. If you haven't already, start reading these publications now to narrow your scholarship search (see Resources below).

  • While nervous excitement is OK, don't stress out too much. Not only could worrying about getting the scholarship throw off your focus, it can sour your attitude. Just remember how much you love to dance and do your best to convey that through your performance.
