How to Treat Metaldehyde Toxicity in Dogs
Metaldehyde toxicity most commonly occurs when a dog ingests a product used to kill snails. A dog will experience symptoms of this condition as soon as 1 hour after ingestion. Metaldehyde toxicity can be fatal to canines and should be treated immediately.

Evaluate your dog for symptoms of metaldenhyde toxicity. Signs of this condition may include an increased heart rate, panting and drooling. In addition, a dog may experience vomiting or diarrhea and become hyperactive.

Transport your dog to the emergency hospital. Contact your vet and advise of your arrival. Keep your dog calm while transporting her to the vet. If she becomes scared or excited, this can make the condition worse.

Ask your vet if you should induce vomiting before coming to the animal hospital. Getting the toxic substance out of your dog’s system quickly may save her life. This is typically done by administering hydrogen peroxide, but the dose should always be prescribed by the dog’s vet.

Create a treatment plan for your canine. Your dog may need a cold bath to lower her temperature. In addition, intravenous fluids should be given accompanied by medication to control her symptoms.

Create a calming environment to heal. Once your canine is released from the vet, she will need a quite place to heal. Wash all bedding and provide a few favorite toys. Remove all distractions and keep other animals and small children away while the dog is resting.

Reduce your canine’s activity while your dog is healing. Keep your dog indoors, and leashed during bathroom breaks.
Monitor your dog closely. Once your dog is home, her condition should slowly get better. If you notice that symptoms are getting worse, return to the vet immediately for an evaluation.
