How to Treat Neosporosis in Dogs

Neosporosis is a parasite that most dogs get while still in the womb. A dog owner may first notice the condition when a puppy isn’t thriving and has difficulty coordinating movements. When caught early, prognosis for this condition is good.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your dog for signs of neosporosis. Symptoms of this condition may include inflammation of the skin, tremors and seizures. In addition, a dog may seem disinterested in eating because it causes pain.

    • 2

Take your dog to the vet for care. This condition can be very serious if left untreated. Contact your vet and advise of the symptoms. Your dog should receive immediate care from his medical provider to make a proper diagnosis.

    • 3

Partner with your vet to create a treatment plan. Antibiotics have proven very effective in treating neosporosis. In addition, your dog may need intravenous fluids if he’s dehydrated and undernourished.

    • 4

Monitor your canine closely. When you dog is recovering he should be monitored daily. If symptoms become worse contact the vet for additional care.

    • 5

Administer medication as prescribed. Even if your dog appears to be feeling better administer medication as prescribed. Stopping an antibiotic early can make your dog’s health condition much worse.

Tips & Warnings

  • Encourage your canine to rest. While your canine is healing encourage him to rest. Move his bed to a quite corner of the home free from distractions and stress.

  • Keep activity to a minimum. Have your dog stay in the house most of the time while healing. He should only be outside for bathroom breaks while leashed. This should cut down on excess activity.
