Monaco is a small country/kingdom located within the borders of modern France. It is also a city, which means the place is sometimes referred to as a city-state. Monaco borders the Mediterranean at a point where many high hills and cliffs surround the sea. The city is divided into four sections: Monaco-Ville, Monte Carlo, La Condimine and Fontvieille. Monaco is famous for its car race, casino and royal palace, where the American actress Grace Kelly once resided there as the country's princess.

From Quick Guide: Do the Continental
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the train to Monaco. You will notice that the new train station is located right inside the middle of a mountain. Follow the crowds along the long tunnel, which will bring you out to broad daylight near the center of Monaco-Ville. There is a coffee shop nearby and a tourist center in the old building across the street, but most visitors head first toward the palace.

  2. Step 2

Climb the hill that leads to the palace. This is a great walk, or you can take the bus. If walking, then follow Avenue de la Porte up the hill. There is a grand view of Monte Carlo along the way, and at the top a small park sits on a high cliff that overlooks the harbor, which is always full of high-priced yachts. The palace is nearby and has a changing-of-the-guard ceremony once a day. There is also a cathedral and an interesting old town near the palace.

  3. Step 3

Visit the Monte Carlo Casino. Take the bus or a cab to get there. This casino has been featured in so many movies, especially the James Bond series. The cost for admission is 10 euros, and it is worth the price just to see the decor. During the day there is no dress code, but at night there is. During the day you can play the one-armed bandits (computerized) or try your luck at the roulette table or blackjack table. Cheapskates can go around the corner to Loew's casino, which has blackjack tables and gaming computers (quite a few) but no dress core, roulette game or fancy decor. Of course, the admission is free.

  4. Step 4

Walk along the beach, which is not too far from the casino, or go for a swim.

  5. Step 5

Visit a shopping mall and go window shopping. The shopping district, located just uphill from the casino, is quite impressive and quite expensive. This is a good place to spend all your winnings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean, modern trains service Monaco from Nice (to the west) and Italy (to the east).
  • Do not take your life savings to the casino.
