  1. Ways to Trim a Beard–Methods

    • 1

Choose a method. There are several, including: shaving, trimming, waxing and clipping. Depending on the style of beard you regularly wear, one of these methods will work well for you.

    • 2

Do what you must with a razor. Shaving with a razor and shaving cream will be necessary in one way or another for all beard trimming. Cleaning up the hair on the neck and cheeks is easiest with a razor. Generously apply shaving cream to the area and pass the razor over your skin in the same direction as the hair is growing. Try not to go against the way the hair is growing because this will lead to more cuts and skin irritation.

Trim your beard. Trimming using a beard trimmer or scissors will allow you to shape your beard the way that you want it. Shaving will get rid of the hair you want gone and trimming will allow you to groom the hair you leave. Keeping your hair about a quarter inch in length will make for a very tidy, clean look. Trim your beard hair every few days to keep that polished look.

    Ways to Trim a Beard--Styles

    • 4

Choose a style. There are several different ways for men to style their beards. Depending on your personal preference, you can choose from one of the following styles: full beard, goatee and mustache, extended goatee, chin strip, chin strip and mustache, goatee, soul patch, chin curtain, mutton chops or mutton chops and mustache. No matter which style you choose, you’ll need to regularly trim your beard to keep yourself looking fresh and clean.

Shampoo your beard. For proper beard care, men should clean their beard before grooming. Use beard shampoo to clean your beard. When it's clean, be sure to dry your beard before trimming. If wet, the beard hair could appear longer; thus, when it is dry, its shape could change.

Trim your beard in a specific style. Once your beard hair is clean, the last step is to trim your beard into the specific style that best represents you. If you choose to keep a full beard, you won’t be removing any facial hair, but you can remove hair from your neck and use trimmers to keep the beard hair neat and groomed. If you choose a goatee and mustache, you’ll have to remove the hair on your cheeks and neck but will leave the hair around your mouth and chin. An extended goatee will have you leaving the hair on your lower cheeks and jaw line, so it will only be necessary to remove the hair on your neck and upper cheeks. A chin strip will require the removal of all hair except for a thin centered strip that extends from below your lower lip down to your chin. For a chin strip and mustache, you also leave the hair above the upper lip. For a goatee you remove all hair except for a groomed area below the lower lip that extends down and around the chin. For a soul patch, remove all facial hair except for a small patch right below your lower lip. For mutton chops, remove all of your beard area hair but leave thick sideburns that extend down to your jaw line. And for mutton chops with a mustache, extend the sideburns across your cheeks to meet with the hair above your lip, remove the rest of your hair for a cleaner look.
