By configuring your domain or website to work with Google apps, you will be able to access Google's convenient and easy-to-use collaboration and communication tools under your own domain. Although it can seem like a difficult task, Google has made it quite easy to set up your domain with their services. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you through the process of configuring Google Apps for your domain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Google Apps homepage (google.com/a/) and sign up for one of the editions offered.

  2. Step 2

Enter the domain name you wish to use with Google apps. If you do not have a domain name yet, you can purchase one directly from Google, which will be preconfigured to work with their services. If you purchase through Google, you don't need to do the following steps.

  3. Step 3

Verify your domain name by either uploading a special file to your site, or by creating a new CNAME record for your domain.

  4. Step 4

On the main dashboard, click "Create new users" to start creating new user accounts. The username you create for each new user is needed for them to log in to Google Apps, and will also be the basis of their new email. Google will automatically create a temporary password for each new account.

  5. Step 5

Click "Email Instructions" to send instructions and information for each new user. Make sure to enter a valid email account to ensure that the new user receives the information.

  6. Step 6

Change the Mail Exchange (MX) records on your domain registrar so that all of your email gets handled and accessed through Gmail. Google provides exact instructions for almost all domain hosting services.

  7. Step 7

Customize the appearance of your Google apps by clicking the "Domain Settings" tab and navigating to "Appearance". You will be able to change the color scheme and upload your own logo.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can still use Google apps even if you don't have a domain name. When you sign up, Google allows you to directly purchase a preconfigured domain name through them.
  • Be sure you have the username and password to access your advanced domain options on your domain registrar's site. You will need it during the configuration process.
