Pumpkin carving is a traditional Halloween activity. Pumpkin carving can be as simple or extravagant as you want. For children, there are even stick-on embellishments to decorate pumpkins with. However, pumpkin patterns can be expensive. Luckily, there are ways to get free patterns for your next Halloween pumpkin.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask friends and family for old patterns. You can also invite them over for a pumpkin carving party; you supply the food, they supply the patterns.

  2. Step 2

Look at coloring books. Many pages in coloring books can be used as pumpkin patterns. Odds are you child has them lying around. Simply make a copy and use it as a pattern.

  3. Step 3

Visit the sites listed in the 'Resources' section of this article. The patterns range in difficulty.

  4. Step 4

Check when you purchase your pumpkin. Some stores offer a free set of basic patterns with purchase.

  5. Step 5

Allow friends or family to display their artistic abilities. Ask them to draw a pattern for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make pumpkin carving a family event. Let everyone decide upon the pattern(s).
  • If carving several pumpkins, find patterns following a theme.
  • If downloading from the internet, be absolutely certain the patterns listed are free and not copyrighted or illegal to download.
