The miniature wedding cake project leaves a lot of room for creativity. Once you get the hang of the basics, you can alter these instructions for taller, wider cakes with different types of flowers or other decorations. To begin, learn how to make the miniature roses and basic cake layers. The detailed decorations on the miniature wedding cake make it realistic for a child's doll house or an adult's small-scale project.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Polymer clay
  • Cornstarch
  • Carving tools or toothpicks and small blade
  • Liquid decorating gel
  • Cardboard
  • Aluminum

Making the Miniature Wedding Cake Layers

  1. Step 1

Choose the color of polymer clay for the cake layers. You may mix half the chosen color with half translucent polymer clay for a more realistic "icing" effect. If mixing two colors, mix the clays together thoroughly by kneading the ball.

  2. Step 2

Flatten the ball of polymer clay until it is about 1 cm thick. Cut three circles from the clay to make three cake layers. Cut a larger base layer. Cut the middle layer slightly smaller than the base. Cut the top layer slightly smaller than the middle layer. You may make the cake taller than three layers by adding more concentric circles.

  3. Step 3

Bake the layers according to the package directions on the polymer clay you are using. Allow the cake layers to cool and set aside.

  4. Decorating the Miniature Wedding Cake

  5. Step 1

Choose a color for the "icing" flowers to decorate the wedding cake. Mix the clay well by kneading a small ball. Roll the ball flat until it is as thin as possible. Cut narrow strips about an inch long using a razor blade or carving tool.

  6. Step 2

Begin at one end of the strip, gently roll it up. Make several small spirals using the narrow strips. Pinch the bottoms of the spirals in to create a rosebud. Then cut the point off the bottom with a razor blade so it will stand up on its base. Make several roses different sizes by using some strips shorter than others. Place the roses an inch apart for baking and set aside.

  7. Step 3

Roll out a very thin pancake of the same flower color or a slightly darker or lighter tone. Using a toothpick or thin carving tool, trace flower shapes about 2/3 inch wide. The flower shapes should have four or five petals. Gently remove each flower shape from the surrounding clay.

  8. Step 4

Retrieve the interior rose buds you made. Place one in the center of a flower shape. Fold the flower petals up around the rose. Shape them to be as wide and open or narrow and tight as your want. Bake the finished roses according to your polymer clay directions.

  9. Step 5

Roll a thin pancake of clay in the green shade you want for leaves to complement the icing roses. Using a toothpick or thin carving tool, trace small leaf shapes in the clay. Remove the leaves from the surrounding clay. Use the toothpick to draw a line down the center of the leaf for a vein. You can also use it to roughen up the edges of the leaves. Bake the leaves according to package directions.

  10. Putting It All Together

  11. Step 1

Retrieve the three cake layers. Use liquid decorating gel between the layers as you stack them. Place the baked roses and leaves on the cake using liquid decorating gel to secure them.

  12. Step 2

To give your flowers height on the wedding cake, use small pieces of clay the same color as the cake layers. Place small balls or miniature snakes of clay around the cake and use liquid decorating gel to secure all the decorating elements. Use a photograph of a real wedding cake as a reference and for decorating ideas.

  13. Step 3

Bake the completed cake again to set all the decorating elements. Allow it to dry.

  14. Step 4

Cut a platter shape from a piece of cardboard. Cover the platter with aluminum foil. Use a toothpick to gently trace a design into the aluminum foil of the platter. Draw a simple design around the edges to give it texture.

  15. Step 5

Glue the finished miniature wedding cake onto the center of the silver platter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use cornstarch on your fingers if the polymer clay gets too sticky or warm.
  • Place clay you are working with in the refrigerator for a few minutes if it gets too warm.
  • Always wash your hands when you are working with polymer clay.
