Starting a home-based business is an exciting and yet challenging time. Motivation and determination will be critical throughout the life of the business and especially in the early days. You will need to learn the ABC’s of setting goals for your business in order to achieve success.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set goals for your home-based business before you even begin to structure the new business. The type of business structure you use will depend on your short- and long-term goals for operating a business from home.

  2. Step 2

Identify realistic goals. Set your goals high without having unreasonable expectations. You probably will not make a million dollars your first year in business and you are not likely to earn a high income working only a few hours per week. Consider the minimum results you want to achieve from your business as well as the best possible results you could ever imagine. Set your goals somewhere in between.

  3. Step 3

Be flexible with your goals. As you begin to structure your business and when you start working at your new business, you might realize that some goals do not fit well. Do not think your goals need to be set in stone. Adjust your goals to meet your needs and expectations throughout the early days of the business.

  4. Step 4

Update your goals as time passes and your business grows. You can often achieve higher goals than you ever imagined. As your business becomes more successful, expand or modify your goals accordingly. Respond to the changing needs of consumers and changes in the marketplace by updating your goals.

  5. Step 5

Receive input from others. Ask others to help you identify goals at the beginning of your business and for as long as you have your business. Someone else might be able to offer you insightful goals that you have overlooked.

  6. Step 6

Make your goals a dynamic part of your business. Setting goals has no purpose if you don’t review your goals and strive to achieve them. Do not write down a list of goals and toss the list aside. Work each and every day towards accomplishing your goals. Your business will benefit and so will you. Your goals can help to drive the success of your business and to encourage you to keep working hard.
