How to Do the Charleston in Step Aerobics

The Charleston dance step is a step many people are familiar with. It is a fun move to add into your step aerobic routine. It can be a fill-in move when you have been working hard and want to keep moving but need a breather. However, this movement can be done either easily to help you catch your breath, or more vigorously to really get your heart rate up. This allows you to add this movement into your routine to help you vary your workout and your intensity level.

Instructions

    • 1

If you are using a rectangular step, place the step on the floor so it is longer side to side than it is front to back. Stand at the right end of the step facing the right front corner of the room.

    • 2

Step up with your left foot.

    • 3

Kick your right leg up as high as you can without rounding your back. Keep the knee as straight as possible.

    • 4

Put your right foot back on the floor without touching the step. Take your left foot off the step and reach it back behind you.

    • 5

Pump your arms as you move, as if you were running. The higher you kick your right leg and the further you reach your left foot back, the more intense the workout becomes.

    • 6

Add intensity by adding a hop on the left foot. After stepping up with your left foot, hop once up and down on your left foot as you kick your right leg.

    • 7

Do eight repetitions and then switch so you are facing the left corner and stepping up with your right foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • For more intensity do bigger leg movements and really pump your arms.

  • As with all step aerobics moves, when you step on the bench make sure you step up with the full foot and place it flat on the step. Avoid just stepping up on the toes.
