Felicity King is the character in the CBC/Disney Channel series from the 1990s called "Road to Avonlea." It was actually called "Avonlea" on the Disney Channel, but it was called "Road to Avonlea" in Canada. Some videos released of the show call it "Tales from Avonlea." Whatever you call it, it's a series about family, friendships and love that takes place at the turn of the twentieth century. Based on the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery and filmed from 1989 to 1996, this show focused on the kids. Felicity King was one of the main characters. She was a lovable young woman coming of age within a close extended family. She was sometimes a nemesis of the lead, Sara Stanley, but she was the hero of the many of the stories herself. Dress up like Felicity King for Halloween, and you'll delight fellow revelers of all ages.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Perm your hair or curl it in tiny curls. One alternative is to get a wig that has small, long, flowing curls. Felicity had dirty blond hair that she wore loose and free most of the time. Put a bow in your hair as well. You should match it to the dress that will be chosen in Step 2.

  2. Step 2

Wear an old-fashioned dress. It shouldn't be too fancy because Felicity made many of her clothes herself (and often envied Sara Stanley's expensive dresses). However, Felicity took pride in her appearance, and the family was more privileged than many others on the island. A plain, simple brown gingham dress was one Felicity wore a few times. It came in at the waist and had a loose skirt. Choose something akin to that for the most effective costume.

  3. Step 3

Put on an elegant apron over your dress. Felicity was very proud of her homemaking abilities. She loved to cook and follow Janet's lead in baking. She also loved to can preserves with Aunt Abigail.

  4. Step 4

Wear old-fashioned boots. There's no need to get too fancy here. During a fight, Sara infamously once said, "Look at your own feet, Felicity. Everyone knows those are the size of snow shoes." Keep the footwear simple and appropriate to the time and place. Some old-fashioned looking work boots from a thrift store will probably do nicely for the occasion.

  5. Step 5

Put on a big ruby ring. Felicity received this from Gus Pike, and it was very important to her. Although you may be playing a younger Felicity, this is still a fun part of the costume. You can find a fake costume jewelry style ring in lots of costume isles around Halloween, or opt for your local dollar store for a selection in the children's section.

  6. Step 6

Carry around some props. In the episode entitled "Proof of the Pudding," Felicity was always quoting a book called "The Family Guide." Cover a book of yours with a simple book cover, and make a print out of the title "The Family Guide" in big letters. Carrying around your own version of the book will get laughs from die hard fans. Other props you could pick include an old-fashioned picnic basket.

  7. Step 7

Watch many episodes of "Avonlea." This show is a modern classic, and you'll get lots of inspiration for your Felicity costume from her adventures on Prince Edward Island. She is a central part of most of the episodes, and you'll roar with laughter at some of the haughty comments that she makes to the other kids. You'll see how Gema Zamprogna brilliantly connected these contradictions of character on the series, and you just may be able to bring some of that to your own costume and partying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your friends dress up as the other King cousins for more easy recognition and fun.
  • Don't forget Felicity's attitude. She was a proud King cousin! That's a very important part of her character.
