Stop Using Profanity

Using profanity may not seem like a very big deal. But cursing in the workplace can be a deal-breaker. Isn't it time you sounded like a polished professional? Try these steps to break the swearing habit once and for all.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the word. Let people close to you know that you are trying to quit using profanity.

    • 2

Ask friends and family to point out whenever you let profanity slip into your conversation. Yes, it's annoying. But it's also a great way to become more aware of your bad habit.

    • 3

Note the circumstances of your profanity habit. Knowing when and how you explode with expletives will help you be mindful of the situations that set off your swear bombs. You may need to avoid the triggers completely until you can get your habit under control.

    • 4

Use something to make an association with not swearing. Wear a colored wrist band or a clunky ring. Carry an object in your pocket that is uncomfortable. Whenever you notice your wrist band or feel the object in your pocket, it will reinforce your desire to break the profanity habit.

    • 5

Replace your usual swear words with a less offensive phrase. Choose something funny or offbeat. Do not choose any phrase that sounds too much like the words you're trying to quit saying, or you'll fall back into the original expression.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're planning to work with or around young children, know that you could lose your job if you use profanity.
