How to Use a Wireless Router
A wireless router frees you up from sitting at that old computer desk, and allows you to surf the Internet wire-free from your couch by taking your high speed connection and beaming it around your home, much like a cordless phone. Follow the steps below, and you'll be surfing the web in no time.
Things You'll Need
- High speed Internet connection with modem
- Wireless router
- Computer with wireless Internet capability
- CAT-6 ethernet wire

1
Make certain that your high speed Internet is up and running. You can check this simply by plugging your computer directly into the modem using the CAT-6 ethernet wire. Open up a web browser; if the Internet comes up, it works.
-
2
Unplug the CAT-6 wire from the back of your computer, and plug it into the Internet port of your wireless router.

3
Plug in the power supply to your wireless router. If you have any questions as to how to do this, consult the manufacturer's directions, but the back of the router is usually labeled well.
-
4
Give the router a few minutes to configure, then connect your computer. Click on your computer's "Start" button, then open the "Control Panel." Click on "Network Connections," double-click on "Wireless Network Connection," then click on "View Wireless Networks." You will want to choose the one on the top of the list that has the strongest signal, and probably the brand name of your router somehow incorporated in its name. Double-click. Your computer is now connected to the Internet.
-
5
Customize your router. Consult the manufacturer's directions as to how to enter the control panel of the router, usually through a web browser. From here you can add a password for your wireless network (WPA protection) or change the name of the network (SSID).
