Step 1
Compare the weight of the ball to your physical strength. Use a ball that feels a bit heavy, but that you can easily control. If a very strong person bowls with a lightweight ball, it will practically bounce down the lane toward the pins. If a weaker person uses a ball that is too heavy for him, he might drop the ball when he tries to bowl. Most people are comfortable using a ball that weighs between 8 and 12 pounds.

Step 2
Pick up the bowling ball by putting your fingers into the three drilled holes. How does it feel? If the holes are too large, you will have trouble holding on to the ball. If the holes are too small, your fingers could get stuck. The ideal bowling ball has holes that are slightly larger than the diameter of your fingers and that allow you to release the ball comfortably. What about the spacing of the holes in relation to the size of your hand? Are the holes too close together, too far apart or just right? The placement of the holes should match the size of your hand, so that your fingers fit into them naturally.

Step 3
Study the condition of the bowling ball’s surface. The ball should be smooth. Any nicks or gouges in the surface could affect the accuracy of your bowling, negatively impacting your score.
