The Magician is an archetypal Major Arcana tarot card. As such, the Magician holds universal and emphatic importance for a tarot reading. If the Fool, card 0 or XII is potential unrealized, then the Magician is the drive to accomplish. In a tarot reading, drawing the Magician signifies energy and guidance. Interpreting the symbols that populate the card helps the seeker to clarify and to prepare for change.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discuss with your seeker that the Magician suggests dynamic and youthful energy. This card introduces creativity beyond imagination. Change is coming and the Magician's tools symbolize the help at the seeker's disposal. The Magician is the first stop along the Fool's journey.

  2. Step 2

Draw to the seeker's attention that the Magician's Wand points skyward, drawing to him the energy of the cosmos. Great life-force energizes the will.

  3. Step 3

Guide the seeker toward balance that is suggested by the Magician's right hand. His hand points downward. The dynamism of universal power must be grounded in the material world for it to have experienced value.

  4. Step 4

Advise the seeker that she is the one who, like the Magician, has the will and the knowledge to use the tools at her disposal in the most effective ways. Remind her of her power and of the responsibility of such power.

  5. Step 5

The Magician reversed is the antithesis of its upright position. The will is dissolute and, perhaps the seeker has been abusing his power and his use of the tools. He may either be manipulative or perhaps he is being manipulated. This is a negative position and great caution is needed.
