Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small, medium and large round balloons
  • Masking tape
  • Newspaper
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Glue dots
  • Ski cap
  • Candy and small gifts
  1. Step 1

Blow up three round balloons--small, medium and large. Glue them together with glue dots to form a snowman. Put all the tied sides together with the other balloon so they won't show. Cut the toilet paper roll up the long way. Form it into a cone shape and using masking tape, tape it together. Then tape it onto the smallest balloon to look like a carrot nose.

  2. Step 2

Make the paper mache paste. Mix 5 parts water with 1 part flour and boil for about 3 minutes. Stir while it's boiling to keep it smooth. Mix in a tablespoon of salt and let cool. Tear newspaper into strips about 3 inches by 1 inch. You will need enough to cover all three balloons at least three times.

  3. Step 3

Dip the strips of paper into the paste and place on the balloons. Cover the nose too. When you come to the parts where it is joined, put on the paper mache in strips around the width loosely. You'll also want to leave a hole for the candy to drop through once you pop the balloons. Leave an opening at the top of the head. Cover the rest of the snowman with two coats of paper mache and let it dry overnight.

  4. Step 4

Once the paper mache is dry and hard, pop the balloons. Use a pin and stick it through the middle section and the bottom section. You can pop the top balloon right through the opening you left at the top. Place your candy or trinkets in the snowman. Cover the hole with a couple of pieces of paper and tape them on with masking tape.

  5. Step 5

Put on a third coat of paper mache, this time going over the covered hole in the top. If it feels strong enough to you, then three coats is enough, but if not then you can add one more coat. Don't do more than four coats. Let it dry overnight.

  6. Step 6

Paint the snowman white. Paint black dots for the eyes and mouth and orange on the carrot nose. You can paint on a colorful Christmas scarf or use a real one. Paint black dots for buttons and use brown paint to look like stick arms coming around to its belly. At the ends of the sticks, paint on mittens to match the scarf. Put on a ski cap. If it doesn't fit right, you can use glue or double sided tape to hold it on.

  7. Step 7

To hang, use wider straps instead of string. Place them around the joint areas and hang the pinata facing down. Now take a pole and beat it until it breaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use real pieces of coal for the eyes and mouth and you can use real buttons. You can even use real mittens and glue them on to make the snowman pinata look authentic.
