Purchasing the right accounting software is crucial to anyone who has to get business done. Learn how to sort through the wide variety of accounting software available on the market by following some very simple steps for evaluating applications for various operating systems, general usefulness and language compatibility issues. Determine which accounting software is best for your personal ventures, such as investments, financial plans and small business. Use these simple steps to narrow down your search for the most reasonable software for your accounting needs.

Look for accounting software from what is compatible with the operating system you are using. If you are implementing software for a small business, then you may switch operating systems as needed, provided that it is a feasible solution. Standard operating systems include Windows, Mac and Linux. KMyMoney is useful for Linux operating systems, and is multi-lingual. Mac operating systems can use MYOB Account Edge or MYOB FirstEdge. These programs have double-entry accounting features. Windows has general accounting software and specialized accounting software available from Microsoft (see Resources below).

Narrow down your search for accounting software by comparing software for various types of markets. These markets may be personal accounting software, mid market and commercial markets, such as restaurants and distributor-type franchises.

Compare structure. Structure encompasses a wide variety of software types including, client-server side, entirely Web-based, Web and personal, or a completely stand-alone application for accounting. Purchasing can be a difficult decision, especially for companies. Wise purchasing can either make you or break you. For businesses that hire a large number of employees, client-server accounting software is an option, so long as the software comes with a large number of seats. "Seats" is a term referring to the number of computers a software application can run on. If you have 25 computers in a small office, but only have 5 seats, then this becomes a problem. However, not everyone needs to use the accounting software--only a handful of accountants and administrative employees need to access your client-server software. This decision really depends on the size and type of company you are operating. If you are running a small office or retail store, then you will need to purchase Microsoft Dynamics Point of Sale for Windows (see Resources below).

Focus on the type of software you need for your accounting. Some software is specialized, while other software is general. Consider financials for financial professionals. If you are interacting with customers then consider customer relationship management software. Some accounting covers industrial companies including, job cost and manufacturing. Are you juggling stocks? Employers should purchase accounting software that features payroll and business intelligence, along with general ledgers, receivables and payables. Accounting may require double-entry. If you are an entrepreneur you will purchase small business accounting software, depending on how small your business is.

Consider purchasing Access Accounting if you use Microsoft Windows. This software is made for Microsoft by Microsoft. Sometimes using software published by other companies outside of Microsoft can cause problems on your computer. If you are not into customizing your software, and you just want a simplified solution, purchase Microsoft applications for Microsoft operating systems. Access Accounting covers your business or personal accounting for financials and payroll, as well as other computer information systems and business ventures. This product is marketed for just about anyone, and it functions as a stand-alone application for accounting.

Purchase accounting software for the languages you will be using. Two applications on the market that support the most variety of languages are KMyMoney and Grisbi. Both of these accounting programs are geared towards personal accounting. KMyMoney works on Linux only. Low- to mid-level markets are supported by another multi-lingual software called WebERP (see Resources below).
