Field stripping the Beretta Model 92 series semi-automatic pistol can be safely done in a matter of seconds. This valuable skill could be a lifesaver in the event of a mechanical malfunction, allowing the user to clear and reassemble the weapon to resume shooting.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Beretta 92 series semi-auto pistol
  • clean, dry hands (preferrably)
  1. Step 1

First and foremost, ALWAYS observe proper safety precautions when executing this procedure. Assume that the weapon is loaded, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, away from any non-intended targets.

  2. Step 2

Unload pistol by first engaging manual safety, rotating fully downward to cover red dots on side of slide. Depress magazine release button to drop magazine from magazine well. Gripping the pistol firmly, use the free hand to rack the slide back to eject any chambered cartridge.

  3. Step 3

Gripping pistol in the right hand, elevate the muzzle slightly and depress the latch release button on the lower right side of the frame, while rotating the disassembling latch downward (clockwise) until it stops. The wing of the latch will be pointing down.

  4. Step 4

Place your left hand over the top of the slide, gripping the sides of the slide firmly, then pull the barrel/slide assembly forward off of the frame using a single smooth motion.

  5. Step 5

Holding the barrel/slide assembly in your left hand, CAREFULLY depress the flanged end of the recoil spring guide rod with your right thumb, just enough to allow it to disengage from its seat on the locking block. DO NOT let this assembly "fly off" the barrel/slide assembly as it can cause damage on impact.

  6. Step 6

The recoil spring guide unit may be removed by turning the slide/barrel assembly over and letting it drop into your hand. Although the locking block may also be disassembled from the barrel, this is not normally required for general cleaning and maintenance. Your 92FS is now field stripped. NO FURTHER DISASSEMBLY SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED !!!

  7. Step 7

To reassemble, follow steps 6 thru 3 in reverse. If stripped for routine maintenance, clean powder residue from all exposed surfaces, dry, then lightly oil sliding components and surfaces prior to reassembly. After slide is remounted to frame and disassembly lever is rotated to normal horizontal position, rack the slide several times to distribute oil evenly along slide rails. Wipe away excess oil, then wipe down exterior of weapon with a silicone impregnated wipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • The recoil spring guide is held in place by the pressure exerted by the recoil spring. Exercise care when disassembling and re-assembling this component!
