Save animals from euthanasia by starting a no kill shelter that helps animals get adopted to forever families. Improve an animal's life and give them hope. Pets like dogs and cats do not have to be euthanized.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get the word out that you are starting an no kill shelter. Ask for donations from local businesses that serve animals like veterinarians, pet supply stores and pet stores. Stress that this shelter will not euthanize animals that are adoptable.

  2. Step 2

Create a website for your no kill shelter and your future dog and cat adoptions to create website traffic. Provide a link on every page on the website for users to donate money via PayPal.

  3. Step 3

Use social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook to get the word out about your no kill shelter. Provide links to your shelter's website and links for users to make donations to your PayPal account.

  4. Step 4

Locate local businesses like coffee shops, ice cream parlors, book stores where you can post flyers with information about your shelter. Hold community meetings to get others involved in the fundraising.

  5. Step 5

Participate in fundraising nights at local restaurants where a portion of the evening's sales go toward your no kill shelter.

  6. Step 6

Ask teachers if students can volunteer by helping to coordinate activities to raise awareness about your no kill shelter.

  7. Step 7

Talk to local animal clubs about your new no kill shelter. You can get valuable donations, supporters and volunteers for future fundraisers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't take no for an answer. Be persistent about asking for money.
  • Whenever possible, use pictures of animals when asking for donations.
  • Accept help from others. The more people raising funds the more likely you are to raise enough to support your no kill shelter.
  • Only accept funds from legitimate sources.
  • Always act in the pet's best interest.
  • Don't allow a dangerous animal to be adopted.

on 6/15/2009 Thank you so much for this information! I have basically been running a No Kill Shelter out of my home for years. I find stray kitties in my yard and try to find homes for them, but by no means will I take them to be put to sleep. However I am at a point in my life where I need a little financial help to feed them. Thank you for inspiring me to finally ask!! 5* rec
