Whether you have pet fish or are an active fisherman, you will eventually be faced with a fish who should be humanely euthanized to end it's suffering.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knife
  1. Step 1

Be certain the fish needs to be euthanized. A fish you have caught and intend to eat or a very sick pet fish that can not be saved with medications or vet care.

  2. Step 2

Lay fish on a cutting board.

  3. Step 3

Place the tip of a sharp knife on the cutting board just above the point above the fish's head (where you'd imagine the neck to be if a fish had a neck).

  4. Step 4

With a quick, firm downward motion of your knife, sever the fish's spinal column. This is the quickest and most humane way to euthanize a fish.

  5. Step 5

If you can not bring yourself to do this, enlist someone else.
