A few years ago I received a letter in the mail from the company telling me they found some money that belonged to me and for a fee, they would let me know who it was and how to get it. This piqued my curiosity and I thought if they knew about it, then it most be public information. Sure enough I had some money that was owed to me on a house that I once owned and a portion of the payment was never given to me. It was $800. Had I used that company, they would have charged me a $200 dollar finders fee.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • patience
  • previous address
  1. Step 1

    Research

Make sure you have the addresses of all the places (city, states) that you ever lived.

Go to Missing Money.com, or unclaimed.org, there are other sites but these two are the better choices and they are free.

  2. Step 2

Go to Website and follow prompts

Follow the prompts to go to the next page. Start with your current address and work your way back. Also type in any maiden names or nicknames you may have used through the years. Men, be specific with Jr. and Sr. suffixes.

  3. Step 3

    Keep a log

You'll have to back track each time and put the name and address in that you used while you were living there each time.

If you find some money and you are pretty sure it's you, just follow the prompts to prove your identity and place a claim.

  4. Step 4

    Cash in

The process of receiving your money normally takes 6-8 weeks.
In these economically challenging times you have nothing to lose.

  5. Step 5

    Research family members

You can also check on your husband, wife, living parents, deceased parents, grandparents, etc.

I found some old bonds for my Aunt that were just sitting in a fund where her husband never pulled them out of a retirement fund he had.

I also found an old life insurance policy for my co-worker that she never knew about. Her mother died 2 years before and they paid for her funeral out of pocket. She claimed $10,000.

    I know Amazing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have names and addresses available for search
  • Be specific with names
  • the more odd the name is, the easier it is to locate that person
  • Stick to your family members, if they are still living it is their money to claim, just pass that blessing on to them.
