Things You'll Need:
- A bag that can hold enough things.
- Luggage that you won't mind getting dirty.
-
Step 1
If you have not yet purchased a carry-on bag, purchase an inexpensive one. Most likely, it'll only be sitting on the floor or in a carry on compartment. Try to buy a dark color, if you can, because it will likely get dirty, which matters a lot less on dark colors.
-
Step 2
Be aware of size regulations for trains and airplanes. You do not want to accidentally have an oversized bag and have to pay extra or not be allowed to take it as a carry on.
-
Step 3
When traveling by airplane, do not pack liquids. You'll most likely have to throw them out. Small containers are often allowed, but they can just as easily be packed in your checked luggage. When traveling by car or train, bring a drink in case you get thirsty and need an immediate drink.
-
Step 4
Bring gum (especially on a plane in case your ears pop) and snacks with you. When traveling, snacks can be expensive, so you'll be much happier to have your own snacks. Bring a variety: hard candy, sweets and salty snacks. You never know what you'll be craving.
-
Step 5
Bring something to read. You don't want to get bored if you can avoid it. Plus, on an airplane, you can't use electronics while taking off and landing, so you'll need alternate entertainment. Bring a notebook if you'd prefer to do some writing.
-
Step 6
Especially when traveling on a plane or train, bring extra clothes in case your luggage gets lost. It won't make up for all of the things that you brought, but it will be better than being stuck in the clothes that you traveled in.
-
Step 7
Pack any necessary medication. You don't want to be without it if you need it. Also pack any life sustaining equipment, like inhalers, that can be carried in your carry on bag.
