Many cocktail recipes call for simple syrup, also known as bar syrup. It truly is simple and will last practically forever. You can use simple syrup to add sweetness to any cocktail without ending up with crunchy bits of sugar in the bottom of the drink. Instructions

      Mix equal parts water and sugar in a small saucepan. 1 cup of each is a good starting point, as most recipes call for about a teaspoon of simple syrup per drink. Simple syrup does not go bad, so there is no harm in making too much.

      Turn element to medium-high. Bring sugar and water to boil, stirring frequently.

      Remove from heat when all of the sugar is dissolved. As the sugar water cools, it will become syrup.

      Store your simple syrup in a closed bottle in a dark, cool place.
