Cutting fruit to garnish a cocktail is easy once you know how. You can slice lemons, limes, and oranges in this way and garnish a variety of drinks including alcoholic cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. This How-to will teach you to slice them so they will nicely sit on the rim of the glass.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp paring knife, or sharp serrated knife
  • Fruit of choice
  • Drink to garnish

Wash your cocktail garnish fruit and remove any stickers. Place on cutting board with ends facing right and left. Carefully cut the ends off.

Turn fruit so that it stands on one cut flat spot and the other cut flat spot is facing straight up. Take your knife and carefully cut down through the middle of flat spot, cutting fruit into equal halves.

  3. Step 3

Place fruit halves flat side up. Carefully take knife and cut about halfway into fruit going from flat end to flat end. You will be cutting what looks like a line going straight down the middle of the garnish. This is to ensure the garnish sits on the side of the glass.

  4. Step 4

Turn fruit halves over so flat side is now on cutting board. You want your flat ends to be facing right and left again. Carefully cut about half inch slices all through fruit, being sure to cut all the way through rind. Limes are notorious for keeping one little piece hanging on connecting the slices.

At this point, your fruit has now become a cocktail garnish. You can slip the cut middle right over the rim of a glass and it will sit perfectly. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • A nice way to garnish your cocktail is to spear together different types of fruits to put on the rim of your cocktail glass. A cherry makes a nice addition to this.
  • Use care when cutting garnish fruit, as sometimes the rinds are tough and slippery. It's very easy to cut yourself doing this!
