How you pack your camping gear in your backpack is a major factor in enjoying your hike. Read this article for step-by-step instructions on how to do it right, from someone who loves backpacking!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Camping gear
  • Backpacking backpack
  • Carabiners
  1. Step 1

Gather all of the items you need to fit in your backpack into your work area. Sort them into 2 piles: things you will need during the hike and things you will need once you get to your final destination. Set aside at least one water bottle.

  2. Step 2

Start by packing items you will NOT need during your hike (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent, etc.). These items go at the bottom of your pack. Your pack likely has a special zippered compartment at the bottom for your sleeping bag. Pack your sleeping bag there.

  3. Step 3

Along the side of your backpack, pack your tent upright (vertical) on top of your sleeping bag.

  4. Step 4

If your pack has outside straps at the bottom, use these to secure your sleeping pad horizontally to the bottom of your pack. If not, pack your sleeping pad vertically next to your tent.

  5. Step 5

Now start packing the rest of your gear. Make sure the items you will need often during your hike are accessible at the top of your pack. Items that will not be needed during your hike should be packed lower in the pack.

  6. Step 6

Small items you will need during your hike should be packed in the small, easily accessible pockets of your pack. These items include snacks, your spork, a small first aid kit.

  7. Step 7

Use a carabiner to attach the water bottle you set aside to the outside of your pack, on one of the loops. This ensures your water will be easily accessible.

Tips & Warnings
  • No item in your pack should protrude out the top or side of your pack. It will be very uncomfortable if you have something jabbing you in the back as you try to hike.
  • Heavier items should generally go toward the bottom of the pack, lighter items at the top.
  • Purchase the smallest, lightest items possible within your budget - this ensures your pack will be as light as possible.
  • A properly fitted pack is key for enjoying your backpacking adventure. Stop by your local outdoors shop to have them fit the backpack for you.
  • The hip straps on your pack help to even out the weight distribution in your pack. Use them!
