Things You'll Need:
- a fraction problem
- pencil
- paper
-
Step 1
Adding: To add fractions, you make both the denominators (the bottom part of the fraction) the same by getting the least common multiple of the two. Once you have done that, multiply by the same number you multiplied to get the denominator ( 1/4: 4x2=8 1x2=2 answer: 2/8 ). After you have done that to both the fractions, add the numerators (the top #) only ( 2/8+ 4/8= 6/8 ).
-
Step 2
Multiplying: To multiply fractions, you multiply both denominators and both numerators.
-
Step 3
Dividing: To divide fractions, switch the second fraction around. So if the problem was 2/3 times 2/3, it would be 2/3 times 3/2. After that multiply both denominators and numerators.
-
Step 4
Subtracting: To subtract fractions, make sure the denominators are the same and do everything like adding up to the adding part. Instead of adding the two numerators, subtract them.
