Step 1
Create a budget. Before you can save money during a recession, you need to know where your money is going. Whimsical spending can add to the financial burden. Grab a piece of paper, jot down your income and debts, and learn your true disposable income. Next, resolve to spend less than you earn, and put the rest in a savings account.
-
Step 2
Pay off debts. If you pay several hundred of dollars in credit card and other debt payments a month, develop a debt elimination plan. The initial out-of-pocket expense is high. But in the long run, you'll save money every month, and you'll have extra cash to survive a recession.
-
Step 3
Eat out less. There's nothing wrong with dining out or grabbing a bite to eat for lunch. However, excessive eating out can put a serious dent in your pocket. Spending $5 a day on lunch equals $100 a month. Bring your own lunch and put the extra cash in savings. You can also consider brewing your own coffee, and if you must dine out, share an entree. The portions are usually large enough for two people to share.
-
Step 4
Buy Used. Nowadays, any and everything can be found on classified ad sites and online auction sites. Whether you're looking for an electronic item, clothes or household items, browse the selections offered at thrift stores, consignment shops and yard sales.
-
Step 5
Resolve to vacation at home. Everyone needs a break. Unfortunately, if you want to save money during a recession, spending money on lavish vacations isn't the answer. Take short weekend trips or plan a vacation at home, wherein you visit nearby attractions. You'll save money on lodging and food.
-
Step 6
Look for ways to make extra money. If you have Internet access and the motivation, you can make an extra $100 a week from home. Profitable work at home businesses include freelance writing, affiliate marketing, home day care, etc.
