Cut Christmas Tree Care

Cutting your own Christmas tree can be a family activity that becomes a yearly tradition. Keeping your tree fresh and helping it last longer once it's been put up in the house and decorated does not have to be hard. With the right care, you can keep your tree beautiful for up to 5 weeks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a tree stand that is deep and holds up to a gallon of water. Fill stand with fresh, plain tap water; you do not need to add any preservatives.

  2. Step 2

Cut about 1 inch off the bottom of the tree trunk. This allows the tree to absorb the water better.

  3. Step 3

Place the tree in the water filled stand and secure.

  4. Step 4

Check water daily and keep the tree stand full of fresh, clean water. Do not let the trunk dry out or resin will form over the cut, making it impossible for the tree to absorb water. If this happens, make another fresh cut.

  5. Step 5

Use miniature Christmas lights on the tree. They are cooler and won't dry out the tree.

  6. Step 6

Take down the tree before it dries out and as soon as it is no longer drinking water.
