Yes, it can be overwhelming. There is so much to do, too many details to take care. Take a deep breath and dig your heels in because you are in this for the long haul. You will make your freelance writing business a success. Follow these suggestions and managing your freelance writing business will be much easier than the decision to start the business in the first place.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get organized. Your office should be an actual space where you can work, not a pile of papers, files and to-do lists. Be careful not to run out of office supplies and keep those supplies handy.

  2. Step 2

Maintain your files. Current projects and assignments should be kept separate from those you have already completed. Find a filing system that works for you.

  3. Step 3

Find a work schedule that works for you. If you write best in the middle of the night, establish your office hours accordingly. Keep in mind the traditional work 9 to 5 work schedule, and be sure you are still accessible in some way during these traditional hours.

  4. Step 4

Do the majority of your business by phone, email and fax. When have to meet with different clients, try to schedule those meetings in one day. Time out of the office on a daily basis can really cut into the time you spend writing.

  5. Step 5

Set your priorities. Never over-extend yourself professionally or personally. Even freelance writers need to have a life outside of the writing world. Take time to care for yourself and get enough rest. Your body will eventually give out if you do not get the rest you need.

  6. Step 6

Freelance writers only make money when they are writing. Manage your professional and personal life to give you every opportunity to write.
