How to Obtain a Gett
Divorce is a turbulent situation even under the most accommodating circumstances. In certain sects of the Jewish faith, a Jewish decree of divorce is required before you can remarry. This decree is called a Gett, and obtaining one is a process that takes time and know-how. With the right knowledge, however, it can be a less painful process.

1
Speak to your Rabbi and determine if you need a Gett. If you are of the Conservative or Orthodox sect of Judaism, you will most likely be advised to obtain a Gett to dissolve your divorce in the eyes of the Jewish community. If an Orthodox or Conservative Jewish woman does not have a Gett from a previous marriage, remarries and has children, those children are considered illegitimate in the eyes of the Conservative and Orthodox community. If you are of the Reform or Reconstructionist sect of Judaism, there is no need for a Gett. A civil divorce document is enough proof of divorce in these sects of Judaism.

Find an organization that can help you. In most large cities, there are organizations that can help you obtain a Gett. In New York City, there are a handful, and some of these organizations can even reach out to Jewish communities in other large cities. These organizations will help you find a scribe, which is the person who will physically write out the Gett for you and your ex-spouse.

Visit the scribe with your ex-spouse. Once you have found a scribe yourself or used the help of an organization, you must go to the scribe with your ex-spouse. There, the scribe will write out the Gett by hand, pass it to the ex-wife and make her walk away from the ex-husband. It will be torn, and the ceremony is then finished. By this point, the marriage is dissolved in the eyes of traditional Jewish law. The charge for this service can be between $500 and $800, depending on where you are. Some organizations offer financial help.
