How to Decorate Documents With Backgrounds in Microsoft Word 2003

Sometimes a plain white background on a document is just not enough. This is why users are able to really spice up the backgrounds of their documents in programs like Microsoft Word 2003 by using the formatting features available for backgrounds. These feature sets allow users to add patterns, pictures and textures to their backgrounds and even color fills with varying gradients and transparency selections.

Instructions

      Open the document that you wish to add a background to. Open and run your application and then load the document that you wish to work on.

      Choose the background color. Click on “Format” and then click on “Background.” You can choose a color from the available color palette, or you can click “More Colors” to choose your custom color.

      Create a custom color. Under the “More Colors” feature in the background color menu, you can click on the “Custom” tab and determine the custom color for your background.

      Determine background fill effects. Click on the “Fill Effects” field and you can change the fill effects of the background. Under the “Gradient” tab you can choose the colors, the transparency and the shading styles by selecting the desired radial buttons.

      Select a texture. Click on the “Textures” tab and you can choose a background texture by clicking on a texture icon.

      Add a pattern. Click on the “Patterns” tab and you can select a pattern and a pattern style by clicking on a pattern and choosing the pattern style from the drop-down menu.

  • Make sure that you choose a background that does not conflict with the view of text or any pictures or objects in your document.

  • This feature can use a lot of ink or toner up when printing pages that are decorated with backgrounds.
