How to Celebrate a 1st Birthday

A baby's first birthday is a huge deal for most families. First birthday celebrations provide an opportunity for family and friends to honor the birthday child and reflect on the past year of the baby's life. First birthdays are exciting because the child is now beginning to understand and take in the things that are going on around them. During a first birthday celebration a child may have a piece of birthday cake for the first time. This can be especially fun.

  • Have a party. A gathering of family and friends is a wonderful way to celebrate a first birthday. Surround your baby with the people that love and care for her most to share in her special day.

  • Make a special cake. In addition to the party cake, make a cupcake or small cake for the baby to enjoy. It's always amazing to see a baby in a high chair discover the taste and texture of birthday cake for the first time.

  • Toss out the bottles. Once a baby turns one, his diet should transform from one of formula to one of dairy milk. Talk to your pediatrician about celebrating your baby's birthday by introducing sippy cups with milk.

  • Dress your baby in a special outfit. A special outfit to celebrate in is always fun. Choose a frilly dress for a girl and a nice outfit for a boy.

  • Take lots of pictures. Document the day by taking lots of photos of your baby and all of the people that have come to join in the celebration.

Tips & Warnings

  • A first birthday can be a great time to throw away the binky. Make it a big day of turning into a big boy or girl and make part of the festivities tossing out the pacifier.
  • It can be tempting to go all out and have horses, a jumping house and other fun things, but at this age your baby won't appreciate these big splurges.
