Instructions

    • 1

Purchase air-dry clay at your local craft store. Crayola makes a wonderful white air-dry clay that is safe for young crafters. Minnesota Clay (see resources) has a variety of colors to choose from. Whether you choose colored or plain white clay is up to you; they can both be painted to any color you desire once they have dried.

Cover your work area with newspapers or a protective cover. Provide a rolling surface for each child. A plastic mat works well. Roll the clay to 1/2-inch thick using a heavy rolling pin. Although you can use thinner clay, it tends to be brittle and breaks easily. If multiple children wish to work at the same time, a thick wooden dowel or bottle will work instead of a rolling pin.

Select a star-shaped cookie cutter and press firmly to cut out the shape from the clay. Several sizes make for a cute display of stars. Use the point of a pencil or a knitting needle to puncture a small hole near the tip of one of the star points. This will be used for adding a decorative cord. Avoid punching the hole too close to the edge of the point. Add sequins or other decorative items by gently pushing them into the clay. If you intend to paint the stars, leave the embellishments until last. Set aside to dry in an area where they will not be disturbed. Follow the manufacturer's directions for drying time.

Paint with acrylic paints once they are completely dry. Apply a small amount of white glue (choose one that dries clear) and sprinkle lightly with glitter or sequins. You can also use glitter spray to add sparkle. Seal with a coat of clear acrylic spray once it has dried. Attach decorative cord through the hole and hang on the tree or display dangling from natural jute.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create other shapes with seasonal cookie cutters.

  • Use hair spray instead of acrylic spray to seal the ornaments.

  • Supervise young children carefully and use caution with spray paint.

  • Always work in a well-ventilated area when using spray paint.
