Ways to Tell if Your Man is Cheating

Pay attention to the signs of infidelity.

Even in stable, longstanding relationships, niggling doubt can arise that your man may be having an affair, leaving you feeling vulnerable and anxious. If you suspect your man is being unfaithful, a little sleuthing can help you discover the truth. Before you believe an unfounded rumor or ignore a well-intentioned one, watch for warning signs that suggest infidelity may be a reality. Be aware, however, that one or two signs, by themselves, may not signify an affair.

1. Observe your man’s appearance. Notice if he is following better grooming habits than he once did. In addition, check his toiletries to see if he is wearing new cologne. Keep and eye out for new clothing items.

2. Listen carefully if your man mentions a woman who seems interested in him. Many men will initially tell their mates about a new woman who is hitting on them, but they will often claim to ignore her advances.

3. Pay attention if your man takes his phone calls in a separate room (especially if that is a new behavior). This is especially important if you answer the phone and no one speaks to you, or the caller hangs up immediately.

4. Suspect that your man may be cheating if he suddenly tries to change your sex life. If you’ve been together for a long time but only recently has he shown interest in trying new techniques, he could be learning them elsewhere.

5. Search his car for signs of deception. Look for new behavior. If he used to keep litter and food wrappers on the floorboard but his vehicle is now clean, it may be a sign that he’s trying to impress someone else. Likewise, check the car’s mileage to see if he’s driving more than usual.

6. Question your man if he’s spending more time away from home than usual. If his excuse is work-related, call him at work after hours or tell him that you will stop by to bring him some food. If he tells you not to, it should send up a red flag.

7. Call your credit-card company and ask for a detailed statement of purchases. Alternately, you may be able to access these online. If your man keeps the details from you but you sense he’s spending more money than he used to, it might suggest cheating.

8. Observe your man’s attitude if he’s suddenly picking fights with you. Cheating men sometimes try to justify their unfaithful behavior by getting you to respond in an angry way, so they can tell themselves it’s all your fault. Don’t take the bait.

9. Prepare yourself for the worst if your mate is exhibiting a number of these signs and is also treating you poorly. If he no longer compliments you or if he insults your appearance, he may be laying the groundwork for a separation.
