1920s by Retro Wardrobe

In the 1920s, prohibition came into effect, prohibiting people from drinking alcohol, which they continued to do illegally in secretive places called speakeasies. The women bobbed their hair for the first time, wore short skirts and, along with the men, did a dance called the Charleston, which originated in Charleston, South Carolina with origins in African dance. Learn how to do the basic Charleston step by following the instructions here.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the Charleston by stepping down (R).

    • 2

Snap kick on your left foot to the front. Your left leg is bent and you pop the lower part (the calf) forward in a kick.

    • 3

Tilt backward when doing the snap kick.

    • 4

      Step (L).

    • 5

Do a ball (right), to the back, and change (left), in place. Your upper torso will tilt forward.

    • 6

Step (L) and repeat the kick and the rest of the step.

Tips & Warnings

  • When your left leg is kicked forward, your right arm should be extended forward and your left arm will be extended to the back. Switch arm positions when you step back and then switch it again, to the original position, when you’re doing the ball change steps. Do this dance step enthusiastically and with lots of energy.
