Snowmen have great character and are fun to build out of paper mache. The glue used in this project is made from household items like flour, salt and water. Salt helps prevent mold, so it is necessary to add some into the flour and water mixture. There's no need for fancy paper. Simple paper such as old stationary, newspaper or gift wrap, will do. The recipe is non-toxic and great for kids as well as adults to use.

From Quick Guide: Paper-Mache Projects
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Bowl
  • Mixing spoon
  • Tablespoon
  • Paper (your choice)
  • Styrofoam balls
  • Dowel--1 inch in length and 1/8 inch thick
  • String hanger
  1. Step 1

Mix 2 parts water and 1 part flour until the glue becomes consistent. If the glue is too thick, add more water. Stir until the mixture is smooth. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of salt to the mixture and stir.

  2. Step 2

Cut the dowel to the recommended length. Push one end of the dowel into one styrofaom ball and push the other styrofoam ball onto the other end of the dowel to form the snowman's body.

  3. Step 3

Tear the paper into strips. Dip one piece at a time into the glue solution. Apply the strips to the snowman and press in place. The paper can get clumped when applying and that makes the snowman textured. If you wish to smooth the paper, dip your fingertips into the glue solution and smooth them over the paper.

  4. Step 4

Keep applying the paper all the way around the snowman body working in a vertical method from the top of the snowman toward the bottom of it. When you have added enough paper, set the snowman aside to dry.

  5. Step 5

Puncture a small hole in the top of the snowman's head Once the paper has hardened, and glue a string hanger in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try painting the snowman with acrylic paint.
  • Spray varnish to finish and add sparkle glitter while varnish is still wet.
  • Use markers to make facial features.
  • Roll strips of paper dipped in the glue to make arms and a carrot nose.
  • While the glue is non-toxic, ingesting it is not recommended.
  • Always spray varnish in a well ventilated area.
