Make an adorable puppy costume for your child's Halloween celebration by following these steps. This costume requires no sewing, only sharp scissors and fabric glue. Using different color schemes, your child can be a Dalmatian puppy or a brown spotted dog. Add face paint for an even more realistic result. This puppy costume is also very safe to wear because there is no mask to slip over the eyes and no loose fabric to trip over.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of puppy you are making. A Dalmatian or Snoopy style dog needs a white sweat suit. However, brown will also work. Get a plain sweat suit at your local discount store. This costume requires at least a hooded jacket and matching pants. If the costume will be worn outside in cold temperatures, then a sweatshirt should also be added. If this will only be worn indoors, a plain T-shirt will be OK. Remember, the child might get hot if she is going to wear it to school, so a matching undershirt is a must.

  2. Step 2

Choose the color of felt for the spots. A Dalmatian will need black felt, while other dogs could use brown. Two shades of brown felt can be overlapped to add texture. Cut the felt into free form "spots." The spots should look natural--no need for perfect circles.

  3. Step 3

Glue the felt to the jacket and pants randomly. Spots on the inner shirt are optional. If the child is likely to remove the jacket, spots on the inner shirt will be needed.

  4. Step 4

Make the ears from very large felt ovals. Have the child wear the jacket with the hood up to place the ears in the correct position. Glue in place.

  5. Step 5

Add extra touches. A red felt strip can be worn as a collar. Glue the collar to the undershirt. Makeup adds to the effect so use face paint to add a nose, whiskers and more spots.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow plenty of time for the costume to dry before wearing, at least overnight.
  • The costume may not survive washing so do not wash before Halloween.
