How to Add Text to a Drawing Object or Picture in Microsoft Word 2003

If you've wanted to add text to pictures and manipulate them in Microsoft Word 2003, use the textbox feature so you can easily do it. The textbox feature allows for the insertion of custom text labels to nearly anywhere on a document. Most often, it is used for adding captions to pictures, but it can also be used for adding text to any other objects, including tables.

      Insert the picture or the object. Click on “Insert” and then click on “Picture.” Choose “From File” and browse to, and select the picture or object that you wish to insert. Click “Insert” to insert the object or the picture into the document.

      Select the picture or object. Simply click on the picture or the object to select it for text editing.

      Insert a text box. Click on “Insert” and select “Textbox.” A drawing canvas will open with a sizable textbox inside of it. Click on the textbox to enter the text. Click and hold on the circular handles to size the textbox.

      Add the text to the picture or the object. Once you have sized and added text to the textbox, hover the mouse in the middle until you see cross sectioned arrows appear. Then click and hold as you drag the textbox over to the desired position on the picture or the object.

  • This feature is very useful for adding text to compliment drawings, pictures, flowcharts and diagrams.

  • Check your document in print preview to assure that the text is legible.
