While it is recommended to wait until after your baby is walking ro buy shoes, you do want to buy shoes right when those first wobbly steps are taken. Non-slip shoes will help the baby feel more confident.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go shopping when the baby is well-rested. Either go the first thing in the morning or wait until after the baby has had a nap.

  2. Step 2

Measure the baby's foot before you try on any shoes. Make sure to use a foot scale that is made especially for kids' feet. Ask a salesperson for assistance.

  3. Step 3

Choose a shoe that is made of natural materials. Canvas or soft leather shoes will prevent the baby's feet from sweating and rubbing around in the shoe.

  4. Step 4

Test the flexibility of the sole. Hold the shoe with the heel in one hand and the toe in the other. Bend these two sides down toward each other. They should bend easily, especially at the ball of the foot.

  5. Step 5

Try the shoes on your baby. Hold the baby in your lap, facing out. This is the way you put on your shoes and feels most natural. Slip the shoes on and encourage your baby to walk around in them.

  6. Step 6

Check your baby's feet for areas that show rubbing or irritation. Your baby should not have to stretch out a shoe. Shoes should fit a baby just right from the beginning.

  7. Step 7

Feel where your baby's heel and toes are. There should be enough room in the back to slip your finger down into and about a quarter inch upfront for growing room.

  8. Step 8

Select a pair after you have tried on two or more.

Tips & Warnings
  • The baby's first shoe should be flexible enough in the sole that he can still use his toes to grip and balance over hard surfaces.
  • Stay clear of hard soles and high-tops. These do not allow enough free movement, and they hinder foot development.
