Get a Baby Used to the Car Seat

Many babies fall asleep the minute you put them in the car. However, some babies seem to hate being in their car seat, fussing and crying the entire time. This is especially true when your baby begins to become more active. No matter how much your baby fusses, you have no choice but to put him into his car seat when your travel. Below are some tips for getting your baby used to his special seat in the family vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Distract your baby. If he cries as soon as you put him in the seat, try to keep him entertained while you strap him in. Sing a song or let him hold a favorite toy.

    • 2

Make sure your baby is comfortable in the seat. Check that the straps are not too tight. If your baby is small, purchase special car-seat inserts that will stop her from sliding around in the seat.

    • 3

Block the sun. Many babies are upset by the sun shining in their eyes. Use the canopy on the car seat to block out sunlight.

    • 4

Entertain your baby while you're in the car. Play upbeat music. Sing and talk to your baby while you are on the road.

    • 5

Have someone sit in the back with your baby. When there are two adults in the car, have one ride beside the baby. He will be entertained and reassured by another person.

    • 6

Bring the car seat into the house. You may be able to get your baby used to the seat by strapping her into it and showering her with attention and praise. Do this for short intervals until she gets used to being in the seat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that the straps of the car seat are not too tight or too loose. You should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the straps and your baby.

  • Babies who fuss and cry in the car seat will often stop if you to turn the seat around. The fact that they can look around and see you is often all it takes to calm them.

  • Make sure your baby is not too hot or cold while he's in the car.

  • Reposition the air-conditioning vent so the air does not blow directly on your baby.

  • No matter how much your baby cries and fusses, never take her out of her seat during a car ride.
