How to Make Glitter Nail Polish

- Nail polish base
- Fine glitter
- Small funnel
- Wax paper
- Teaspoon
- Clear top coat

Choose your favorite nail polish color. It is best to use a new and unused nail polish for this project. Choosing a clear polish or clear polish with a tint would work best to reflect the glitter, but feel free to experiment with your favorites.

Pick a very small sized glitter. Search art supply stores and craft stores to find the finest glitter you can. Don't forget to pick the color that goes best with your polish choice.

Use a small funnel or create your own funnel out of wax paper. Tear a small piece of wax paper and twirl it into a cone shape. Make sure whatever kind of funnel you use fits inside the mouth of the nail polish bottle.

Pour about a teaspoon of glitter at a time into your funnel. Remove the funnel, replace the nail polish lid and shake to infuse. Add more depending on how glittery you want your nail polish to be.

Paint your nails with your new glitter polish and make sure to let it dry completely. Paint nails with at least one coat of clear top coat to seal the glitter pieces onto your nails.

I tried to make my own, but found all glitters are not the same. Had an excess of some cheap glitter I got after Christmas intended for crafts and, apparently surface application only. Also had some glitters I bought for nail art on ebay. Used most of the cheap stuff in a clear polish and a little of the nail art glitter. After a little research I found some glitters are silver metal flakes that are coated with the colors. They are fine for surface, dry, glitters, but the colors come off when put into the polish. The colors that came off turned my clear polish brown, still pretty but just brown with silver flakes. The nail art glitters are made of plastics and they are solid color. The only colored flakes that remained in my polish were the little bits of plastic nail art glitter. They don't lose their color when put into nail polish and they float better and don't sink to the bottom either. I have used these cheap metal glitters for dry glitter application on my nails. They don't lose their color if you just, quickly, top coat them but they don't work well suspended in liquid nail polish.
