Showing Appreciation for a Pastor

Many people attend a particular church because of their affection for the pastor, so it's a good idea to let this person know how much you appreciate him from time to time. Most churches will have a "Pastor Appreciation Sunday" during the year, but that is only for one day. Letting your pastor know what he means to you will keep his spirits high, especially during hard times (even pastors struggle).

Instructions

Give your pastor a sincere “thank you” from time to time. You may be surprised how something this small can make a pastor's day. Each week, members of the clergy receive emails and letters which aren't necessarily flattering. By reminding your pastor that you think he's doing a great job, you can keep him emotionally and spiritually strong.

Invite your pastor over to your house for dinner. Most churches have “fellowship Sundays” or a cookout during the year. This dinner is a personal way for you to thank your pastor. Learn his favorite dish beforehand and serve it during dinner.

Ask fellow members of your congregation to write letters of support to your pastor. This is nicer than generic greeting cards as people will be able to speak from their hearts in their personal letters. If people wish to place a letter inside of a greeting card, that would work as well.

Have a surprise “thank you” service in honor of the pastor. Plan for members of the congregation to share personal stories about how the pastor has helped them through the years. Invite his family to the service so that they can see just how loved their relative is. At the end of the service, have a special collection which will go towards a gift for the pastor and his family.

Give the pastor a gift certificate. Individuals with a significant following often receive gifts of items that they either already own or that they will not use. A gift certificate will avoid this from occurring. Learn your pastor's interests before giving the certificate. For example, if you know that he likes to golf, you could buy him a certificate for a free round of golf at a local course.

Start up a charity at your church in the pastor's honor. For example, you could name a food drive after your pastor. This shows more than just appreciation for the pastor. By doing this, you're letting that person know that he inspires you to help others. That's a priceless gift for any pastor.
