How to Use Flame Gel in Fake Fireplaces

Flame gel fireplaces continue to grow in popularity. Not only are they beautiful pieces of furniture, but they add beauty and warmth to any room. However, just like any other combustible material, the flame gel used in these stunning fireplaces must be handled properly. Handled the wrong way, they can blow up, causing damages to the home and those within it. They also have the capability of starting fires that cannot easily be extinguished. Here are some tips for the proper use of flame gel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use flame gel only in fireplaces that are properly equipped for their use. Essentially, such fireplaces must, as a minimum, contain a fireproof metal firebox.

    • 2

Make certain that there is nothing within the firebox that can catch fire. Remove paper and any other combustible materials.

    • 3

Choose whether or use one or two flame gels in the fireplace. Never use more than three flame gel cans at one time. Too many flame gels may heat the firebox too much or too quickly, causing dangerous temperatures that could cause the material to combust.

    • 4

Purchase only the brands and/or types of flame gel that are approved for the fireplace owned. Other brands may not be safe.

    • 5

Remove the flame gel’s paper label. Flip off the top.

    • 6

Stir the gel if it appears partially dried out or inconsistent on texture. Use a metal instrument that cannot absorb the gel material.

    • 7

Place the flame gel can(s) on the bottom of the firebox. Make certain that it is setting flat on the floor.

    • 8

Ignite the flame with a long match or a long electric lighter. Be sure not to get hands too close to the flame.

    • 9

Replace the top on the flame gel anytime you want to extinguish the flame.

    • 10

Re-ignite flame gel that wasn’t completely used the first time around. Be sure to stir before attempting to light the gel.

Tips & Warnings

  • The flame may take a few minutes to fully ignite.

  • The flame gel will pop and crackle normally so don’t panic at the sounds.
