The best way to display your photos, portraits and artwork is to make your own frames and the best material to use for making the frames is wood. Making your own wood frames will allow you to create a frame that is the perfect size for your picture or canvas. The creation will fill you with a sense of pride and accomplishment and you will be able to make a frame for less money then you would have spent purchasing an identical frame.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ruler
  • Wood
  • Table saw
  • Wood plugs
  • Miter clamp
  • Glue
  1. Step 1

Measure the perimeter of the photo or canvas that you want to frame. Make sure that you record the measurement, as you will use these numbers to determine the length of the wooden pieces you will need. When cutting the wood, you need to add 1/2 inch to each piece.

  2. Step 2

Select the type of wood that you would like to use for the frame. Pine, hemlock, ash and mahogany are excellent choices when making wooden frames.

  3. Step 3

Cut the wood to match the measurements. Make sure that the guard is on the table saw before you start cutting. Each cut should be made at a 45-degree angle.

  4. Step 4

Glue the pieces of the wood frame together. Attach the miter clamp to the corner and allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.

  5. Step 5

Us the drill to drill a 1-inch hole in each corner. The hole should be 1/4 inches from the top of corner.

  6. Step 6

Press the wood plugs into the newly drilled holes. Make sure the wood plugs are made out of the same kind of wood as the rest of your frame.

  7. Step 7

    Stain and varnish the frame.

  8. Step 8

Place a piece of glass or plastic inside of the frame. Place the photo behind the glass. After placing the item you want to frame behind the glass, glue a mat board to the back of the wood frame.
